The Republic of Zoutpansberg was a Boer republic in the far north of today's South African province of Limpopo . The republic was founded in 1849 by Andries Hendrik Potgieter from Voortrek and named after the mountain range of the same name .
From 1854 to 1858 Stephanus Schoeman served as a general in Zoutpansberg. The capital Zoutpansberg village was later renamed Schoemansdal, but finally abandoned in 1867 after an evacuation after Venda attacked the village. In 1858, after negotiations between Schoeman and Marthinus Wessel Pretorius, the republic was incorporated into the South African Republic (Transvaal). The northern part of Limpopo Province is still known today as Zoutpansberg.
