The Republic of Kliprivier ( Dutch : Republiek van Kliprivier ) was a Boer republic founded in 1847 and only existed for a short time in what is now the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal . It was located in the area of the later town of Ladysmith and was named after the Kliprivier River, which flows through the area.

In the mid-1840s, only a few Boers lived in Natal . Most of the Boers left the area for Highveld after the United Kingdom annexed the Republic of Natalia in 1843 . On January 7, 1847, Highveld-Buren signed a contract with the Zulu king Mpande , so that the Republiek van Kliprivier could be founded between the Tugela and the Buffalo . Head of state was Andreas Theodorus Spies. However, the treaty violated an agreement that Mpande had with the British in 1843 to define the border between Natal and Zululand had closed. The republic was subsequently annexed by Great Britain in 1848 . The Governor of the Cape Colony , Sir Harry Smith, assured the citizens of protection. In 1850 the existing settlement was raised to the status of "Ladysmith". Spies founded the Republic of Utrecht in 1853 , which became part of the South African Republic in 1860 .
