The Elevador do Bom Jesus ( Portuguese for funicular benevolent Jesus ) is a water ballast railway in Braga , Portugal, built in 1882 . It leads up to the pilgrimage church Bom Jesus do Monte , which offers a view of the city and the surrounding forests.

The funicular without direct electric drive was built by Niklaus Riggenbach and is not only the oldest on the Iberian Peninsula , but also the oldest functioning water ballast railway in the world.
