Andrew Leith Adams

Andrew Leith Adams (born March 21, 1827 in Bellfield , Banchory , Kincardineshire , Scotland , † July 29, 1882 in Queenstown, now Cobh in County Cork , Ireland ) was a Scottish medic, naturalist and geologist.

Live and act

Adams was the second son of Francis Adams (1796–1861), who ran a doctor's practice in Banchory and was known as a translator of Greek medical works by Hippocrates.

Andrew Leith Adams studied medicine. From 1848 to 1873 he was a surgeon in the Army Medical Department in the military. In 1861 he became a surgeon major . During his assignments abroad, he used the opportunity to research natural history in India, Kashmir, Egypt, Malta, Gibraltar and Canada. His observations on fossilized vertebrates from the islands of Malta led him to study fossilized elephants, an area in which he became a recognized authority.

Adams left the military in 1873. He became Professor of Zoology at Trinity College Dublin in 1873 and Professor of Natural History at Queen's College Cork (now University College Cork ) in 1878 . He held the latter post until shortly before his death.

Honors

Adams became a member of the Royal Geographical Society in 1870 , in 1872 he was accepted as a member (" Fellow ") in the Royal Society of Edinburgh .
