Carlo Piaggia

Carlo Piaggia (* around 1827 in Badia di Cantignano , Capannori , Province of Lucca ; † January 17, 1882 in Karkodje , Sannar ) was an Italian botanist and traveler to Africa.

Life

Born near Lucca around 1827, Piaggia came to Alexandria via Tunis in 1852 , where he lived for a few years as a gardener and watchmaker. In 1853 and 1866 he went to Khartoum in the wake of elephant hunters and repeatedly traveled to areas on the Nile , then joined Guillaume Lejean and in 1860 traveled with Orazio Antinori on the Bahr al-Ghazal .

In 1863 he made his most important trip to the Azande (also: Niam-Niam), with whom he stayed until March 1865. Later he stayed in the upper Nile countries and Ethiopia , sailed the Nile as far as Mruli in 1873 and then returned to Europe, only to turn back to Sannar in 1878. In 1880 he came to Khartoum on behalf of the Italian Geographical Society to visit the missing travelers Chiarini and Cecchi. On the journey to Jadussi he died on January 17, 1882 in Karkodje (today Sannar ).
