Orazio Antinori (born October 28, 1811 in Perugia , † August 26, 1882 in Shewa , Ethiopia) was an Italian zoologist and traveler .

biography

Orazio Antinori studied natural sciences in Perugia and Rome . Antinori supported Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte in setting up his zoological collections and drew for his book Iconografia della Fauna Italica .

In the mid-1840s he took part in political endeavors and was also active as a journalist. He fought against the Neapolitans at Velletri in 1848 and held the rank of captain in the defense of Rome. The entry of the French troops drove him into exile .

He went to Athens and a year later to Smyrna , which he made the center of his scientific, especially ornithological, excursions. In 1854 Antinori accompanied Princess Cristina Belgiojoso to Syria , then returned to Smyrna and from here wandered across Asia Minor .

In 1859 he went to Egypt and from 1860–61 toured the upper Nile countries with Carlo Piaggia . After returning home, he sold his valuable ornithological collection to the museum in Turin, where he produced an excellent catalog (Milan 1864). After several years in Italy , he made a trip to Tunisia , was among the representatives of Italy when the Suez Canal opened in 1869 and then joined the Sapetos and Beccaris expedition to Abyssinia , where he stayed for a long time and had a rich zoological harvest. On returning to Italy, Antinori was appointed secretary of the Italian Geographic Society (in Rome).

In 1874 he went to Tunis to explore the Schotts , and in 1876 he led an expedition to Central Africa . He penetrated from the bosom of Aden to Shoah and died there on August 26, 1882 in the Italian station Lèt-Marefià in Ethiopia .
