Fritz Stroke

Fritz Strich (born December 13, 1882 in Königsberg i. Pr. , † August 15, 1963 in Bern ) was a German-Swiss Germanist.

Life

Strich was a student of Franz Muncker and in 1910 became a lecturer at the University of Munich . In 1915 he was appointed associate professor in Munich and in 1929 full professor at the University of Bern . In doing so, he escaped persecution of the Jews in the German Reich. In 1941, Strich was granted Swiss citizenship and was a full professor until his retirement in 1953 .

Strich received the Goethe Medal in 1932 , the City of Bern Prize for Literature in 1951 and the Goethe Plaque in 1953 . Strich was a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry .

Strich's estate in the Burgerbibliothek Bern documents "above all [his] scientific work".
