August Kopff

August Kopff (born February 5, 1882 in Heidelberg , † April 25, 1960 in Heidelberg) was a German astronomer and discoverer of many asteroids (minor planets).

Life

From 1924 to 1954 he was the 18th director of the Astronomical Computing Institute (ARI), initially in Berlin and from 1945 in Heidelberg .

Kopff discovered Kopff's comet in 1906 , also known from a rendezvous of the Galileo space probe , and 66 asteroids between 1905 and 1909 , and he was also the co-discoverer of two other asteroids.

The lunar crater Kopff and the asteroid (1631) Kopff were named after him. Since 1933 he was a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In 1936 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . The Prussian Academy of Sciences he was also since 1936 as a member. He was accepted into the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences in 1947. From 1939 to 1945 Kopff was chairman of the Astronomical Society .
