Tomlinson Holman

Tomlinson Holman is an American sound engineer and co-founder of THX , a seal of quality for high-quality sound reproduction in cinemas and home theater systems.

THX

As an employee of George Lucas recording studio Sprocket Systems , Holman developed a system of standards in 1982 that was supposed to standardize the acoustics from the recording studio to the cinema hall in order to match the performance in the recording studio to the sound reproduction in public cinemas. Although the sound was mixed well in the recording studio, the viewer in many cinemas could hardly notice the good sound due to the poor technical and room acoustic conditions. Holman's standardization included not only the technology used, but also the nature of the rooms in which the sound was played.

On this basis, Holman worked with Sprocket Systems to develop an arrangement of speakers that was integrated into the specific acoustics of the Sprocket Systems dubbing studio. This so-called THX Sound System could be adapted to the respective characteristics and construction in almost any cinema. A list of criteria was drawn up that a professional cinema had to adhere to in order to obtain the so-called THX license.

As a result, George Lucas founded THX Ltd. in 1983, which has awarded this seal of quality to cinemas and now also to home theater systems.

In 2007 he received the IEEE Masaru Ibuka Consumer Electronics Award .

Audyssey

In 2002 Tomlinson Holman founded Audyssey Laboratories Inc. together with Sunil Bharitkar and Philip Hilmes , the developments of which can now be found in many home theater amplifiers .
