Jamal Basit (* 17th September 1978 in Brooklyn as Ajmal Basit ) is a retired American basketball player .

Career

Basit began his basketball career at the University of Massachusetts Amherst . In the NCAA he had good statistics. After three years in Massachusetts, he was kicked out of the team after an argument with his coach, after which he was transferred to Delaware. There Basit denied his senior year and left the university with an average of 15.2 points and 9.6 rebounds. After a season in the US American League USBL , accompanied by two appearances in NBA camps, Ajmal Basit moved to Europe.

His first stop in Europe was Portugal . There he played for CAB Madeira. A year later Basit left Portugal again and switched to Maccabi Ramat Dan in Israel . But Basit only stayed here for a year and moved to Avitos Gießen in Germany .

Gießen, known for signing good centers, did so this time too: 10.3 points and 10.7 rebounds on average in 28 games meant a double-double over the entire season. After the season, Gießen wanted to convince Basit to extend his contract. This did not succeed and he accepted the offer from Bayer Giants Leverkusen . Basit convinced the people in charge at Leverkusen so much in the first season that he signed a follow-up contract for two years in 2004. Basit, who was one of the leading players in the team of the record champions, was also able to produce good stats in the 2004/05 season. However, it was not enough for the playoffs with the giants from the Rhine . In his last season with Leverkusen he fought with the team against relegation. After an impressive series of seven games won, Leverkusen managed to keep the class. Basit was one of the pillars of this team. For example in the important game against Telekom Baskets Bonn , in which he made 16 points and got 11 rebounds. In June 2006 the coach of the Giants Achim Kuczmann announced that Ajmal Basit will be leaving Leverkusen. After many rumors about his person, Basit switched to EWE Baskets Oldenburg . Finally, on August 7, 2007 Science City Jena announced the commitment of Ajmal Basit and so he left EWE Baskets Oldenburg after only one year. The decisive factor was the playing time: In Leverkusen, Basit played about 24 minutes, in Oldenburg he only managed 13 minutes and in Jena he is back on the floor for over 26 minutes per game. In the game against the Köln 99ers on November 24, 2007, Basit was able to set his point record in the BBL: He scored 25 points.

On September 24th, 2008 he left Jena after the sporting descent and went to Portugal to Ovarense Aerosoles . This was followed by positions in Szolnoki Olaj KK in Hungary, at the ESPE Basket Châlons-en-Champagne in the French Nationale Masculine 1 and at Lions de Genève in Switzerland.

After the end of his playing career he became a high school basketball coach.
