The Regional Court of Oldenburg is, along with the Regional Court of Aurich and the Regional Court of Osnabrück, one of three regional courts in the district of the Oldenburg Higher Regional Court . It has its seat in Oldenburg (Oldenburg) .

history

After the end of the French era in the Duchy of Oldenburg in 1814, the French court organization was abolished and a court organization with seven regional courts for the Grand Duchy was re-established.

With the separation of the judiciary from the administration as part of the March demands of 1848, the judiciary was also reorganized with the Courts Constitution Act of August 29, 1857. The seven regional courts were dissolved and replaced by three higher courts Oldenburg , Varel and Vechta . However, these only exercised the function of district courts.

In 1879, as part of the Courts Constitution Act of October 1, 1879, another regional court in Oldenburg was established for the German Empire. After the Second World War , it was reopened on August 29, 1945. The district courts of Brake, Elsfleth and Nordenham were added to the regional court district late in 1946, as they were located in the enclave of the American occupation zone until the establishment of the state of Lower Saxony and were partly assigned to the regional court of Wesermünde and partly to the regional court of Bremen.

Courthouse

The district court is located in the building at Elisabethstrasse 7, which was badly damaged during an air raid on Oldenburg in the night of September 22nd to 23rd, 1943 and burned down completely. The great lack of space was only ended in 1954 when the public prosecutor moved out and the building was extended. Due to the increasing number of employees, the entire criminal department, several civil chambers and four conference rooms are now located outside the main building. The plans for an Oldenburg justice center have not yet been implemented.
