The courthouse

The district court, opposite the castle church on the site of the former pleasure garden, is one of the oldest buildings in Varel.

The building was planned in 1869 in the neo-Gothic style by Hofrat Ernst Klingenberg , as a representative building was needed for the upper court. The Oldenburg State Parliament supported the construction with 32,000 thalers . The building was completed two years later in August 1871. Higher courts were abolished in 1879 when the Reich was founded and the district court moved into the vacant building. Today the facade is listed and only the interior has been renovated. Despite vehement resistance from the population, the large, historic meeting room inside the district court was reduced in size.
