Verden District Court.

In addition to the regional courts in Bückeburg , Hanover , Hildesheim , Lüneburg and Stade, the Verden regional court is one of six regional courts in the district of the Celle Higher Regional Court . It is based in Verden .

history

As part of the judicial reform in the Kingdom of Hanover , a higher court was established in Verden in 1852. After the Courts Constitution Act was passed in the German Reich in 1877 , the seats of the new regional courts were distributed. Stade envisaged a first draft to the detriment of Verdens. After successful lobbying by some of the citizens of Verden, a regional court was to be established in both Stade and Verden. In contrast, Nienburg, as another competitor for the seat of the court, lost what was then the higher court and was added to the district of Verden. After the Second World War , the district court was reopened on July 3, 1945 with only one criminal chamber. In more recent history, the Verden District Court wrote judicial history when it approached the Federal Constitutional Court in 1976 with an order for reference on the question of the compatibility of life imprisonment with the Basic Law .

Courthouse

In the first years of the court, parts of the town hall served as accommodation. When the new regional court building could be moved into after two years of construction in 1884, the city of Verden also got the rooms of the town hall back. The new building was built as a red brick building in the style of the late Wilhelminian era . At the height of the first floor was the heading "Koenigliches Landgericht" , which was "guarded" on the right and left by two Prussian eagles.
