PanAmSat was a telecommunications , Internet, and broadcast services provider based in Wilton , Connecticut .

The company, founded by Reynold Anselmo in 1984, had its own fiber optic networks and a fleet of 21 satellites. Nine satellites, the "Galaxy" series, are specially designed for the transmission of HDTV broadcasts. PanAmSat said it was the first operator of a private satellite.

In 1996, PanAmSat and Hughes Electronics merged their satellite operations, but retained the PanAmSat name. PanAmSat was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

On June 20, 2006, Intelsat bought PanAmSat for $ 3.2 billion and took over the satellites.
