Nuyorican

Nuyorican - suitcase word from New York and (Puerto) Rican - is the name for the members of the cultural diaspora of Puerto Ricans in and around New York City and for their descendants. Their number is given today at around 1.1 million.

The writer Jesús Colón (1901–1974) is considered to be the father of the Nuyorican movement. The Puerto Rican poet, journalist and political activist Clemente Soto Vélez settled in New York in the 1940s. The name of the person became more internationally known when Miguel Algarin moved the literary circle that had arisen around him in New York in 1975 from his apartment to a rented Irish pub and this was called the " Nuyorican Poets Cafe ". This year, Miguel Algarin's and Miguel Piñero's book “Nuyorican Poetry. An Anthology of Puerto Rican Words and Feelings ”. This cultural institution later moved to Alphabet City . Over the years, this has resulted in a multi-ethnic cultural center that is considered the center of the Nuyorican art movement.

The Nuyorican Nicky Cruz became known as the leader of a New York gang called The Mau-Maus, has renounced this criminal past and now lives as a Christian preacher in Colorado.

Furthermore, the judges Edwin Torres and Sonia Sotomayor see themselves as representatives of this ethnic group.

The El Museo del Barrio museum has one of its focuses on the culture of the Nuoro Rican movement.

In 2000 Laurie Collyer made the documentary "Nuyorican Dream".

One of the variants of Puerto Rican English spoken in New York City is also known as Nuyorican English .
