Laurie Collyer
Laurie Collyer (* 1967 in Mountainside , New Jersey ) is an American film director and screenwriter . She became internationally known through films such as SherryBaby or Sunlight Jr.
life and career
Laurie Collyer was born in Mountainside, New Jersey in 1967. After graduating from Oberlin College in Ohio and attending NYU Film School , where she financed some student films herself, she worked in the film business in the mid-1990s, first as a script supervisor and assistant director, before taking on the production and directing of the documentary Nuyorican Dream first attracted attention in 2000. The directorial work Nuyorican Dream has been shown at numerous well-known film festivals in Germany and abroad and has been nominated for various awards, including the production of Collyer received 2000 nominations at the Sundance Film Festival , the Directors Guild of America and 2001 at the ALMA Awards . Laurie Collyer also won awards for Best Director at the International Festival of New Latin American Film in Havana , the Cinéma du Réel in Paris and the LA Outfest , where she was honored with the Audience Award in the Outstanding Documentary Feature category.
In 2006 she succeeded in staging the drama SherryBaby with Maggie Gyllenhaal in the lead role, another highly acclaimed production. The film and directing were again nominated for numerous festival prizes and awards, including Maggie Gyllenhaal's 2007 nomination for best actress for the Golden Globe Award .
In 2013 Laurie Collyer wrote the script for the drama Sunlight Jr. and also directed it. The film, with the cast of Norman Reedus , Naomi Watts and Matt Dillon , received nominations at the Women Film Critics Circle Awards and at the Tribeca Film Festival that same year .
In 2018 she was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
