Sabine Schmidtke

Sabine Schmidtke is a German scholar of Islam . Since 2014 she has been a professor at the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton , New Jersey .

Life

Schmidtke obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1986 and a Magister Artium from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London in 1987 . In 1990 she received her PhD from Oxford University .

From 1991 to 1999 Sabine Schmidtke worked as a professional diplomat for the Foreign Office . In addition, she worked from 1997 to 1999 as a lecturer in Islamic studies for the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn .

From 1999, the year of her habilitation , she worked as a visiting professor for Islamic studies at the Free University of Berlin . In 2002 she became Professor of Islamic Studies there.

In 2006, she conducted research as a guest fellow (Directeur d'études invité) at the École pratique des hautes études (EPHE), Paris , France on polemical works of Islam against Judaism.

In 2011 she became director of the Intellectual History of the Islamicate World research department at the Institute for Islamic Studies at the Free University of Berlin. Since 2013 she has been an extraordinary member of the Laboratoire d'études sur les Monothéismes , Center national de la recherche scientifique in Paris.

Since 2014 she has been a professor at the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.

Honors

  • 2002: World Prize for the Book of the Year of the Islamic Republic of Iran for the book: Theology, Philosophy and Mysticism in Twelve Shiite Islam of the 9th and 15th centuries. Century. The world of thoughts of Ibn Abi Gumhur al-Ahsa'i , Leiden 2000
  • 2006: Prize for scientific achievements in the field of the Twelve Shiites, awarded by the Research Center for Written Cultural Assets, Tehran , Iran
  • 2011: “Award for Excellent Supervision” from the Dahlem Research School (DRS), distinction
  • 2017: Member of the American Philosophical Society
