The El Museo del Barrio (Spanish for: The Museum of the District ) is a museum for art from Latin America and the Caribbean in New York City .

location

The Museo del Barrio is located in East Harlem in New York City's Manhattan borough on Fifth Avenue and 104th Street at the north end of Museum Mile .

history

The museum was founded in 1969 through the efforts of the Nuoro Rican (that's how Puerto Ricans are called New York City) and the Civil Rights Movement , protesting against the lack of cultural diversity in New York City's educational offerings. From the beginning, both the presentation and communication of art and culture from Latin America (especially Puerto Rico ) were central concerns of the museum. At the beginning, the artist and educator Raphael Montañez Ortíz was commissioned with the creation of materials for schools in East Harlem and Central Harlem , which should shed light on Puerto Rican art, history and culture. Originally this project and museum served primarily as a neighborhood institution for the Puerto Ricans of East Harlem.

In the 1970s, the museum was a non-profit organization that was initially housed in shops and townhouses until the museum was able to move into its current rooms in the Heckscher Building on Fifth Avenue and 104th Street. During this time, the museum received its first donation for a permanent exhibition and organized the first major exhibition in partnership with the Metropolitan Museum of Art , entitled The Art Heritage of Puerto Rico .

During the 1980s, more and more exhibitions and educational programs were realized and the exhibition area was fundamentally renovated. In the second half of the decade, the Museo was on the verge of collapse after the museum's financial management became the focus of investigations and the museum's accounts were frozen. The then director was then fired and thanks to the voluntary work of the employees, the museum was able to survive this time.

In the 1990s the theater and the exhibition area were renovated and the Museo was financially stabilized again. A new logo was introduced for the museum, and due to the continued influx of Latin American immigrants - mostly Puerto Rican - to New York City, the museum's remit was expanded, causing conflicts with some artists, scholars, and neighborhood activists who were involved in the original, local mission of the Museum wanted to hold on. The debates on this continued into the 2000s.

Finally, in the new millennium, the museum's mission was expanded from its local dimension to all Puerto Ricans and Latin Americans in the United States . An oral history project, a permanent exhibition with a five-part publication and a traveling exhibition have all been completed.

Since the number of visitors has also increased since 2000 with the new orientation of the museum, the exhibition space became increasingly too small. However, it is not possible to expand the exhibition space in the Heckscher Building, as a number of other organizations and several municipal institutions are also housed in this building in addition to the museum - including a school.

For a few years there were considerations to move the Museum of the City of New York , which is located in the immediate vicinity, to the historic Tweed Courthouse in Lower Manhattan . The Museo del Barrio could then have moved into the vacant building and thus had much more exhibition space available. But then Mayor Michael Bloomberg decided to house the new New York City Department of Education in the Tweed Courthouse by City Hall , putting an end to the hopes of both museums. As a result, the El Museo del Barrio decided to start a 15 million dollar project to convert the forecourt into an open, glass hall in order to give the museum an appropriate, public "face" on the street side. A café with event facilities is also housed here. However, this project will not be able to increase the exhibition space, which is still the main concern of the museum.

collection

The museum has an art collection with around 6,500 exhibits from the pre-Columbian era , archaeological artifacts , a large Taíno permanent exhibition, as well as arts, crafts, graphics and pop culture elements from the 20th and 21st centuries. There are regular temporary exhibitions of modern art from Puerto Rico and Latin America. In addition, the museum hosts numerous festivals and educational programs every year. Part of the museum's permanent exhibition can be viewed online on the museum's website.
