The New York City Department of Education (German about: Department for Education of the City of New York ) is a municipal authority of the City of New York , which is mainly responsible for the public schools in city sponsorship.
With over a million students and around 75,000 teachers in around 1,700 schools, it is the largest authority of its kind in the United States of America .
The authority is led by the Board of Education (Education Commission) and the Chancellor (Chancellor). The current chancellor is Carmen Fariña.
The annual budget of the Authority amounted to nearly 26 billion US dollars .
Until 2002, most of the public schools in New York City were administered in a decentralized and direct democratic manner for more than 30 years. The authorities responsible for the city's public schools were the city's education commission, whose members were appointed by the mayor and district presidents, and 32 local community school boards , whose members were directly elected. The elementary and middle schools were administered by the local school commissions and the high schools and grammar schools by the municipal education commission. In 2002, the local school boards were dissolved and control of all public schools in New York City was centralized with the local government and the newly established education department.
