Souren Baronian
Souren Baronian (born February 1930 in East Harlem , New York City ) is an American multi-instrumentalist ( clarinet , soprano saxophone , duduk , kaval , flutes , percussion ) and composer who is successful in both jazz and world music .
Live and act
Baronian, whose parents are from Armenia, grew up in Harlem. He got to know jazz in the clubs on 52nd Street . He was initially mainly influenced by Lester Young. After his return from the army in the Korean War , he received lessons from Lennie Tristano and the Turkish clarinetist Safet Gündeger. As early as the late 1950s, he was experimenting in the field of (later) ethnic jazz . He worked with musicians like Cannonball Adderley , Phil Woods , Joe Beck , Paul Motian , Don Cherry , Paul Winter and Carla Bley ( Escalator over the Hill ) on the one hand, with Udi Hrant Kenkulian, Mustafa Kandıralı , Kadri Şençalar, John Berberian and Tasos Halkias on the other with which he partly recorded. From 1975 he headed the Taksim group ; he is also on the road with the Trio Transition . He toured regularly in both the United States and Europe. He has performed at Lincoln Center , Carnegie Hall , Town Hall, and on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show . He taught numerous musicians to play the dumbek and also the riq . Tom Lord has nine recordings (between 1967 and 1998) with him in his Jazz Discography .
