Turtle Bay is a neighborhood in the borough Manhattan in New York City , USA .

The neighborhood in Midtown Manhattan stretches between 41st and 53rd Streets and to the east from Lexington Avenue to the East River across Roosevelt Island . This is where the UN headquarters and the Chrysler Building are located .

history

Turtle Bay got its name in the 17th century. It provided shelter for the rough weather on the East River. It became a center of shipbuilding. The Dutch governor of Nieuw Amsterdam gave this piece of land to the English in 1639 and named it "Turtle Bay Farm". The US Army set up a drafting office here during the Civil War . In 1863, an angry mob burned the office during the New York Draft Riots .

After this war, brown sandstone was used for construction. As early as 1868, Turtle Bay was the location of breweries , slaughterhouses and coal stores. With the arrival of poor immigrants, the quarter slowly fell into disrepair. A power station was built in the 1920s Charlotte Hunnewell Sorchan created Turtle Bay Gardens in the 1920s and 1930s . Famous residents of the neighborhood were Katharine Hepburn , June Havoc , Ricardo Montalbán and Tyrone Power In 1966, these areas were named Turtle Bay Gardens Historic District . 1928–1930 the Chrysler Building , one of the landmarks of New York, was built.

In 1948, slaughterhouses were demolished to make way for the construction of the UN headquarters . This was completed in 1952.

Turtle Bay Association

The Turtle Bay Association was founded in 1957 to represent the interests of local residents and local businesses and organizations in the neighborhood.

Fujitsu , Avianca , Ethiopian Airlines and Delta Air Lines have office buildings in Turtle Bay. Since 1975, Trans World Airlines has had its headquarters in Turtle Bay.
