It was separated from Wards Island by the narrow inlet Little Hell Gate , which was filled in in connection with the creation of parks and the construction of the Triborough Bridge (today's Robert F. The island is accessible for pedestrians and cars via the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge from the boroughs of Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx. The Hell Gate Bridge also crosses the island.
The island is now home to a training facility for the New York City Fire Department and the headquarters of the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority . However, most of the island is a public park. The Randalls Island Sports Foundation built a variety of sports facilities, including a golf course, tennis courts, and soccer, basketball and baseball fields.
In 1938 a big swing festival took place here, with Count Basie and Duke Ellington among others .
