The Icahn Stadium is an athletics stadium at the York New District Manhattan belonging Island Randalls Iceland in the East River .
history
The Icahn Stadium was partially built on the site of the Downing Stadium , which was demolished in 2002 , and inaugurated on April 23, 2005. The 42 million US dollars expensive sports facility was funded in each case equal numbers of public and private funds. The multibillionaire and major investor Carl Icahn paid the last ten million US dollars for the naming rights . The Icahn Stadium, designed by Zurita Architects, meets all the requirements of the IAAF World Athletics Association for international events.
The single grandstand offers 5,000 seats. Two floodlight towers right next to the grandstand illuminate the stadium. The self-supporting roof is suspended from the floodlight towers using steel cables. An expansion of the sports facility to 20,000 seats would be possible. Behind the stadium is Interstate 278 , which is led by the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge over the Hell Gate .
In addition to the stadium, the island has undergone a restructuring to 480 acres (around 2 km 2 ). A total of US $ 300 million was invested with the cost of the stadium. In 2008 the renovated Randall's Island Golf Center was inaugurated. It includes the driving range with a length of 320 yards (around 300 meters) for 78 players, a short game area with sand bunkers and a 36-hole mini golf course . In addition, there are sports fields for various activities such as American football , basketball , soccer , baseball , softball , field hockey , rugby , lacrosse , cricket , etc. on the island.
In addition, there are other leisure and recreational opportunities at Randall's Island Park . The US $ 18 million tennis center with 20 courts, which was inaugurated in 2009, has been part of the John McEnroe Tennis Academy since 2010 .
The redesign was completed in spring 2010. More than 60 new sports and gaming venues were built on Randalls Island.
Events
In 2005, the Reebok Grand Prix athletics meeting was held at Icahn Stadium for the first time . In 2010 it became part of the IAAF Diamond League under the name Adidas Grand Prix . There are also regional and national high school and college athletics events such as those of the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA), the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) or the Youth Challenge Series .
The New York Lizards from Major League Lacrosse (MLL) used the stadium for two of their games in 2013.
The Jesse Owens Track & Field Program introduces children 7-14 years old from public schools in Harlem and the South Bronx to athletics and nutrition , with an emphasis on healthy lifestyles.
