Tudor City is an apartment complex on the east side of Manhattan in New York City . Twelve buildings house 3,000 apartments and 600 hotel rooms. Since May 17, 1988, the settlement is a Historic District of New York State under monument protection .

location

Tudor City is in close proximity to the East River , between 40th Street and 43rd Street, and between First Avenue and Second Avenue . In addition to the hotel, the complex also includes shops as well as three parks between the houses and a playground.

The area on the East River, in the vicinity of today's settlement, has been ruled by gangster gangs such as the Rag Gang (rag gang) of the gangster Paddy Corcoran since the end of the 19th century and therefore also called the Corcoran Nest . First factories, breweries and slaughterhouses settled here. The settlement was built on the edge of the then built-up area. The houses in the decidedly elegant Tudor City were built "with their backs" facing the industrial area, so they didn't have large windows in that direction. Today the UN building and the new UN Plaza are located on the site of the former industrial area .

history

The housing estate was built from 1925 to 1928 exclusively with private funding from the Fred F. French Company . Tudor City was an attempt to renew the urban landscape, a counter-image to the isolated and ever taller skyscrapers. It is the first high-rise city in the world to be used as living space. A small town with a park was planned, a piece of old England in the middle of Manhattan, with the concept of living there and walking to work ( Live in Tudor City and walk to business. ).

Construction work

The name Tudor City is derived from the House of Tudor , an English ruling family of the 15th and 16th centuries in the transition from the late Gothic to the Renaissance. In the history of art, the Tudor style is associated with a very specific arch motif . All of the group's buildings stand out for their careful stone treatment and the emphasis on simple cleanliness.

The buildings in Tudor City are not very high, that was not the intention and also did not match the English model. The middle wing has only 29 floors. The coveted and most expensive top floors offer the opportunity to create a small roof garden.
