Astronaut food
As a cosmonaut or astronaut food is called the carried food of astronauts during a mission. This is packed in plastic bags or tubes.
In the 1960s, i.e. between the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin (1961) and the first Apollo 11 moon landing (1969), astronaut food was developed. Initially, it was in the form of small, pressed cubes to provide the spaceman with fats, proteins and vitamins . Sterilized applesauce was used as a drink because the food had to be easy to digest.
The cubes were later turned into dried food in plastic containers that had to be formed into a meal with water before consumption. Due to the breakdown of bones in weightlessness, the food contains a particularly high proportion of calcium .
Meanwhile, z. B. NASA astronauts compose their space menus from 74 dishes and 20 drinks. The meals are checked by nutrition experts for sufficient nutrients, as people feel less hunger and thirst in weightlessness. Can be seasoned with salt water and pepper in oil.
