The Battery

The Battery (2015 Battery Park ) is a ten- hectare large park on the southern tip of Manhattan and one of the oldest parks in New York City . The port located there serves as the starting point for ferries to Ellis Island , the Statue of Liberty , Staten Island and, in summer, Governors Island .

In addition to Castle Clinton, there are many other monuments in the park, such as the Netherlands Memorial , the East Coast War Memorial , the monuments of John Ericsson , Giovanni da Verrazzano and the poet Emma Lazarus as well as the memorial to the first Jewish immigrants .

The Battery, 1793

The park takes its name from the Dutch gun batteries that were once posted here to defend what was then the port of New Amsterdam . Today's coastline has moved forward somewhat due to silting up and backfilling. The landfill was created by excavation during the construction of the World Trade Center , which was destroyed in 2001 and built between 1966 and 1973. This enlarged the park by about two hectares. The Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf laid out the Garden of Remembrance here , to commemorate the victims of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 . The Battery Conservancy provides $ 4 million annually to maintain the garden. The park has around six million visitors from all over the world every year. In 2015, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation renamed the facility to its original historic name, The Battery .
