Castle Clinton , also known as Castle Garden , is a memorial at the top of Manhattan now known as Castle Clinton National Monument .
The 1811 ninety yards from the shoreline of the island of Manhattan created Castle Clinton had m² with an area of 4000 once a preliminary artillery position in New York City , by a causeway to the Battery Park was connected. Together with the fortresses Fort Jay and Castle Williams on Governors Island , it served the military protection of the strategically important waterways around New York City as well as the city itself. Castle Clinton is now in Battery Park on the mainland due to silting and filling.
In 1824 Castle Clinton was converted into the Castle Garden theater , in 1840 the former courtyard was roofed over and the house was used for theater performances and exhibitions. In 1850 the Swedish singer Jenny Lind - one of the first world stars - made her first appearance here in the United States.
In 1855 the former fortress was leased to the state of New York , which used it as a receiving station for seven million immigrants to the United States until 1890 , before the new facilities were opened on the nearby island of Ellis Island in 1892 . A database of immigrants is kept there, which also contains 10 million records from the period 1835 to 1892 with the data from Castle Garden.
After a further renovation, the building served as an aquarium show from 1896 to 1941 . In 1946 it was designated as a National Monument- type memorial and so saved from demolition. It was restored to its original state as a fortress and now serves as a museum. Ticket sales for the ferries to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are also located in the building .
