The General Motors Building is a skyscraper in New York City .
The building was erected between 1964 and 1968 on the site of the previously demolished Savoy-Plaza Hotel on 5th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan and is 215 meters high, making it the 49th tallest building in New York City (as of 2016). It was named after its owner, the automobile manufacturer General Motors . The structure, which takes up the entire block between 5th Avenue, Madison Avenue , 58th and 59th Streets , has 50 floors. These are used almost exclusively for office space, only individual floors are reserved for technical equipment such as elevator systems. There is no public access to the building.
The floor plan of the house consists of a rectangle, from the ground floor up to and including where the structure ends with a flat roof. The load-bearing elements in both the core and the facade are made of steel. The facade was clad with glass and aluminum, which gives the building its light silver color. The construction of the building including the facade is architecturally similar to the former World Trade Center . The architects Emery Roth & Sons involved in the General Motors Building were also involved in the planning of the World Trade Center, which was built just a few years later.
The giant FAO Schwarz toy store, which is over 150 years old, is one of the tenants; There is a glass Apple store in front of the building.
In 2013, investors from the People's Republic of China and Brazil took a 40 percent share in the building; It became the most valuable building in the United States, valued at $ 3.4 billion.
