background
The building was designed and built by the architects Schultze & Weaver , together with Buchman & Kahn . The Netherland Hotel, designed by William Hume for William Waldorf Astor in the 1890s, was previously located on the property of the Sherry Netherland Hotel . In the winter of 1926 it was demolished and construction work on the Sherry Netherland began. In March 1927 nearing completion, the house was the Louis Sherry, Inc. sold. But the upper floors suffered a spectacular fire when wooden scaffolding caught fire on April 12, 1927, just before the building was completed. The fire burned for 12 hours and flames are said to have been seen from Long Island. It sparked a debate in the press about the ability of available technology to put out fires in high-rise buildings.
The building has been a listed building since 1981.
