Ninth Avenue (Manhattan)
The Ninth Avenue (north of West 59th Street : Columbus Avenue ) is a thoroughfare on the West Side of Manhattan in New York City .

Ninth Avenue is a one-way street, so traffic runs south along its entire length. It rises immediately south of West 14th Street on Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District and extends 45 blocks north to the intersection at West 59th Street, where it is renamed like the other avenues on the West Side . From now on it is called "Columbus Avenue" after Christopher Columbus up to West 110th Street , where it is renamed again - this time in Morningside Drive , which runs north through Morningside Heights to 122nd Street . Later, Ninth Avenue reappears in two short stretches: between 201st and 208th Streets and between 215th and 225th Streets. In 2008, Ninth Avenue was redesigned between 31st Street and 14th Street and a bike path was created on the west side of the street between the curb and the parking lane.

North of Lincoln Square , where the corporate headquarters of the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) is housed in a group of refurbished and new buildings, Columbus Avenue runs through the Central Park West Historic District from 67th / 68th Street to 89th Street . In this section it presents itself in a uniform street scene of 5- to 7-story apartment buildings with brick and sandstone facades and subtle neo-Romanesque or Italianate elements . The buildings are separated from one another by very narrow access paths in the middle of each block. The architectural unity of this street section came about because only a few developers were involved in the construction of the building, who repeatedly implemented the same design lines. There are also several apartment buildings on Ninth Avenue that were built on a generous scale before the First World War . Also worth mentioning is the former Endicott Hotel and a block of McKim, Mead, and White offices on 72nd Street .

There are also various ecclesiastical institutions on Ninth Avenue such as the Church of St. Paul the Apostle , the Church of the Holy Apostles, and the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen.

In terms of transport, the largest bus station in New York City, the Port Authority Bus Terminal , at 41st Street and the only subway station on Ninth Avenue are of particular importance: "66th Street - Lincoln Center" (IRT Broadway - Seventh Avenue Line). From the 19th century, an elevated railway ran over Ninth Avenue - Ninth Avenue Elevated. It was taken over on April 1, 1903 by the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT). When the City of New York took over IRT in 1940, Ninth Avenue Elevated ceased operations and the elevated railway was dismantled.

In the television show Seinfeld , the street scenery that was used for most of the street scenes is based on the appearance of Columbus Avenue.
