The 72nd Street is a main street that cuts through New York City's borough Manhattan ( USA runs).

Location and course

72nd Street runs in both directions between east and west. At the west end it turns into the north end of Riverside Boulevard . The Franklin D. Roosevelt East River Drive (FDR Drive) on the East River is the eastern end of 72nd Street.

72nd Street is one of the few streets that runs through Central Park . It connects the Upper West Side with the Upper East Side via Women's Gate , Terrace Drive and Inventors Gate . However, Terrace Drive is often closed to vehicle traffic. Therefore, the 72nd Street (M72) bus line crosses the park at 65th Street .

At the intersection of 72nd Street, Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue is Verdi Square - a small, triangular square, opposite is Sherman Square .

architecture

Before the advent of car traffic, the wide, transverse thoroughfares were popular building sites for outstanding Gilded Age mansions . The first mansion of its kind was replaced by the luxurious 907 Fifth Avenue condominium block on the southwest corner of Fifth Avenue in 1916 . Charles Lewis Tiffany's residence , built in 1882 by McKim, Mead and White on the northeast corner of Madison Avenue (19 East 72nd Street), has also been replaced by a block of flats designed by Rosario Candela . This urban development has survived the Rhinelander Mansion by architect Alexander Mackintosh on the southwest corner of Madison Avenue (867 Madison Avenue), which is now the Ralph Lauren flagship store .

At the west end of 72nd Street in Riverside Park is a memorial to Eleanor Roosevelt and the listed Beaux-Arts Chatsworth Apartments (344 West 72nd Street) by architect John E. Scharsmith (built: 1902-1904, extension: 1905-1906). The well-known residential building The Dakota is on the corner of West 72nd Street and Central Park West . On Third Avenue , the Tower East apartment block established a new type of high-rise apartment building in 1960. The block designed with slabs is set back from the street and has its own entrance area on the ground floor.

On 11 October 2006 the plane crashed the baseball player Cory Lidle in the Belaire Apartments , a 50-storey residential complex on the 524 East 72nd Street between York Avenue and the FDR Drive. Lidle and his flight instructor were killed.

Local transport

72nd Street is a major stop for several lines on the New York Subway :

The M72 bus runs across the city on 72nd Street east to the Upper East Side ( York Avenue ) and west to the West Side ( Freedom Place ).

The nearest subway stops beyond 72nd Street on the Upper East Side are 68th Street - Hunter College (IRT Lexington Avenue Line) and 77th Street (IRT Lexington Avenue Line) .
