Belaire Apartments (also known as Belaire Condominiums and The Belaire ) is a 156-meter high-rise apartment building in Manhattan . The 42-story New York building is located at 524 East 72nd Street between York Avenue and the East River on the Upper East Side in the east of Manhattan Island at Roosevelt Island . It contains 183 condominiums , a gym, parking garage, and a pool; the lower 21 floors are used as a hospital.

The building was erected in 1988 by the Zeckendorf Company and replaced a previous parking garage of the Hospital for Special Surgery . It was designed by Frank Williams and Associates with a red brick facade. The property continues to belong to the Hospital for Special Surgery ; in exchange for the transfer of the building rights to Zeckendorf, it received the lower twelve floors. Originally, nurses and technicians were housed there to provide them with affordable New York accommodation.

Plane crash

On October 11, 2006 to 14:45 local time, crashed a single engine propeller aircraft of the type Cirrus SR-20 against the building. The pilot Cory Lidle (pitcher New York Yankees) and a flight instructor accompanying him were killed; another twenty-one people were injured, including eleven firefighters. Memories of September 11, 2001 were sparked and frightened New Yorkers. An investigation by the NTSB revealed that the pilots had insufficiently planned a 180 ° turnaround and incorrectly estimated the space required.
