Bank of America Tower is the name of a super skyscraper in the New York borough of Manhattan that was completed in 2009. The tower is named after its owner, Bank of America , the largest US bank since 2006. The building is located in Midtown , not far from Times Square on Avenue of the Americas (6th Avenue) between 42nd and 43rd Streets, near Bryant Park . The address of the tower is One Bryant Park .
Architecture and description
The 366-meter-high skyscraper has been the second tallest building in New York after the Empire State Building , which is 381 meters (443 meters with a mast) , since the top was installed on December 15, 2007 . It towers over the Chrysler Building and the New York Times Tower with a height of 319 meters each. In the spring of 2013, however, it was surpassed within New York by the 541 meter high One World Trade Center , and at the end of 2015 also by the 432 Park Avenue residential tower . It is currently the fifth tallest building in the city and the seventh tallest building in the United States .
The roof of the building is 288 meters high, the tower measures 366 meters with the top. In contrast to simply attached antennas, the mast on its roof counts towards the official building height, as it is part of the architecture of the building. The entire building facade was clad with glass. On the roof, another glass wall extends a few meters high (up to a height of about 292 meters). The top of the building, which tapers upwards, is located in the middle of the roof. Since December 2010, the top has been illuminated in different colors at night.
Construction work began in 2004 and was externally completed in December 2007. The tower was built by the New York company Tishman Construction , which also operates at Ground Zero . The interior work on the building continued until the beginning of 2009. The namesake, Bank of America , takes up most of the 195,000 square meters of office space for itself. The usable area is distributed over 55 floors, which is comparatively little for a building of this size. The tower is the tallest building to date that Bank of America has commissioned to build. The construction of the Bank of America Tower cost around a billion dollars.
During the construction work there were several accidents in which passers-by were injured by falling debris and broken glass. This was due to the fact that glass parts of the facade were apparently not installed correctly and so fell down.
Construction
The building should be environmentally friendly through the use of multi-pane insulating glass , automatic blinds and a rainwater collection system.
In May 2010, the Bank of America Tower won the highest award for environmentally friendly high-rise buildings. The general environmental friendliness, the room quality of the workplaces, the ventilation and power consumption as well as the use of the building materials were rated as particularly positive.
Inside the tower there is a massive concrete core that is supposed to protect cables, stairwells and elevators from vibrations or fire. The structure of the floors and the columns that run along the facade were made of steel.
