history

The Diamond District came about when diamond dealers moved from Downtown Manhattan to Midtown Manhattan in 1941. Previously, they had their stores in the Canal Street and Bowery area since the 1920s and in the Financial District near Fulton Street and Nassau Streets since the 1930s .

When the Nazis invaded the Netherlands and Belgium , Jews tried to flee to the USA, among others , including those who were involved in the diamond trade in Antwerp and Amsterdam . The latter then mainly settled in New York City in what is now the Diamond District and stayed there after the end of World War II .

Economical meaning

This area is still one of the most important addresses in the international diamond trade - alongside London , Antwerp, Mumbai ( India ), Ramat Gan ( Israel ), Johannesburg ( South Africa ) and at the same time the best address in New York for buying diamonds.

The Diamond District is the world's largest shopping street for diamonds of all shapes and sizes and gemstones. More than 90 percent of all diamonds imported into the US go through New York City, and most of those go through the Diamond District. 2,600 different companies are represented here, almost all of which have to do with diamonds or precious stones.
