Lower Manhattan (or Downtown Manhattan or just Downtown ) is the southernmost part of Manhattan Island in the American metropolis New York City . Downtown borders on Midtown to the north , which in turn is located south of Uptown .

The borough is the center of New York City's financial world and borders the Hudson , the East Rivers, and north on 14th Street . All of Lower Manhattan and especially the Financial District is criss-crossed by thoroughfares in a south-north and east-west direction. The Lower Manhattan Business Center is the actual core below Chamber Street. The area is best known for the Financial District and the former World Trade Center . On the southern tip are Battery Park and South Street Seaport (two other historic areas of the district). The Lower Manhattan Business District is the fourth largest business center in the United States after Midtown Manhattan , Chicago's Loop, and Washington DC.

After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , in which the two towers of the World Trade Center collapsed, Lower Manhattan lost as much commercial space as the entire city of Cincinnati , for comparison . Since its topping-out ceremony in May 2013, the One World Trade Center , which is part of the new World Trade Center, is by far the tallest structure in Lower Manhattan at a height of 541 meters. After the 2001 attacks, 70 Pine Street, 290 meters high, was the tallest building in South Manhattan.

The small Mmuseumm opened in 2012.
