action

Tunisia , April 1943 . A column of French Foreign Legionnaires is tasked with evacuating the gold from the El Ksour bank to Sfax . As soon as they arrived, however, a unit of the German Africa Corps slaughtered all but four men from an ambush. What remains are Adjutant Mahuzard, Sergent Augagneur and the legionaries Boissier and Borzik. They can hide in a house and meet the last survivor of the original French defenders, the artilleryman Béral, who joins them. Mahuzard and Borzik attempt to rescue explosives from one of the trucks, killing Borzik. Mahuzard can save himself in the bank.

The Germans send a patrol into the house, which Augagneur and Boissier take out. Disguised as Germans, Augagneur and Béral go to the last functional cannon and fire at the German base. Then they join Mahuzard in the bank with Boissier. Augagneur, who is no longer interested in the legionary profession, now wants to bag the gold himself. Mahuzard, however, sticks to the order, and the legionaries split up, with Béral initially choosing Augagneur.

In the morning, bank director Laroche-Fréon appears to hand over the gold in the vault to the legion commander. However, he has to come to terms with the fact that Augagneur wants to secure the gold for his purposes and not for France. When Augagneur Mahuzard locked up in an adjoining room after an argument and had Béral guarded him, he became aware of Hélene, the banker's wife. He rushes to her and gets her to take him home with him to get some provisions or to sleep with her when the opportunity arises. But he doesn't come because the German lieutenant colonel Karl Brenner knocks on the door with his tank. Augagneur takes him prisoner and takes him to the bank with Hélene. In between, she offered him her help in stealing the gold bars in order to free herself from her husband. At the bank, however, Mahuzard intimidated Béral and taken over the helm. He locks him and the German in Boissier's room in a safe.

Hélene manages to grab the key and smuggles it to the three prisoners who escape in this way. The director now prepares the handover with Mahuzard and the gold is loaded into the truck. After the director died from an electric shock while peeing on an electrical line, Augagneur, Boissier and Brenner appear with his armor. When Mahuzard refuses to hand over the gold and shoots Boissier, Brenner blows up the truck along with Béral and Mahuzard. Augagneur and Brenner remain with Hélene, but separate from her after Augagneur sees through her wrong game: she had asked each of the two to kill their rival. Brenner and Augagneur go to the interior of Africa to exchange the gold at a drug dealer. During the journey, Brenner tried in vain to shake off the Frenchman when he stopped to refuel. Augagneur overpowers Brenner, leaves him on the coast and drives the tank to the meeting point. Once there, he meets the contact man, but the next morning suddenly finds himself surrounded by a whole French army. With his presence of mind he plays the faithful legionnaire who wanted to secure the gold for de Gaulle, and for this he earns the highest praise. Although he has to forego the gold, he receives an award and the acquaintance of the lovely Mme Chanterelle.

Reviews

“Adventure film about Jean-Paul Belmondo; a bland mixture of violence and stupid sayings. "
