ARD radio festival

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ARD radio festival is the joint evening program of the ARD cultural radio stations during the summer months from mid-July to mid-September. It is realized by the ARD-Kulturradios in co-production and under changing leadership. The broadcast of this community program is justified with savings effects and a reduced demand for cultural radio stations in summer. Critics see this as a limitation of the variety of programs, because almost all ARD cultural programs broadcast the same standard program in parallel. It first aired in 2009.

history

Even before the introduction of the radio festival, the ARD's cultural waves worked together particularly intensively during the summer months to produce live broadcasts and recordings of selected concerts and operas at the numerous classical music festivals that take place during this time and to exchange them with one another. In particular, the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation traditionally broadcasts the Bayreuth Festival , which is also taken over by other ARD cultural and classical broadcasts, partly live, partly in the evening program. A kind of forerunner of the radio festival was the joint evening program that WDR 3 and NDR Kultur had produced over many years.

Since 2009, the ARD radio festival has been providing a uniform evening program from 8 p.m. to midnight during the summer months from mid-July to mid-September. Since the ARD night concert immediately follows, the joint program even lasts until the early morning of the following day during this time.

Some programs were made available for listening to in their own podcast right from the start . In 2010 there was a live stream with a bandwidth of 320 kB / s for the first time . Since 2011 all programs can be listened to in the ARD media library , including classical concerts.

The ARD radio festival was initially broadcast alternately by an ARD station. The other cultural stations - NDR Kultur, Bremen Zwei , WDR 3, hr2-kultur , SWR2 , SR 2 Kulturradio , rbbKultur and MDR Kultur - each take care of the entire evening program. The Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation is the only company that has so far only participated in part in the ARD radio festival. In 2011 the broadcast “Nachtmix” was taken over by Bayern 2 late on Saturday evening in the community program. B5 plus has been broadcasting all programs since 2017 . In 2012 and 2019, the Hessischer Rundfunk is in charge of the event, but the radio festival was not only given by one institution, but was organized by all participating cultural programs.

program

The broadcasting route begins with a concert recording or with the live broadcast of a classical concert or an opera. The first concerts come from the Beethovenfest Bonn and the opening of the Rheingau Music Festival , while the live broadcast of the Last Night of the Proms from London, commented on by Rolf Seelmann-Eggebert until 2015 , will be broadcast at the end of the last evening.

A reading follows. In 2009 the reading of the Buddenbrooks by Gert Westphal was broadcast as a repeat from the ARD programs. The following year Bel-Ami , read by Christoph Bantzer . In 2011 readings of various autobiographical texts were brought by Thomas Bernhard (Ein Kind, The Cause, The Breath), followed by contributions by contemporary German-speaking writers who had been written especially for the ARD radio festival and were read by the authors themselves, among them Zsuzsa Bánk , Sibylle Berg , Marica Bodrožić , Katharina Hacker , Patrick Hofmann, Steffen Kopetzky , Tanja Langer , Thomas Pletzinger , Gregor Sander , Benjamin Stein , Ilija Trojanow , Alissa Walser and Judith Zander . In the following years the following readings could be heard:

In 2009 historical “radio documents from 60 years” were compiled from the German Broadcasting Archive. Since 2010, this slot has been filled with a half-hour interview with well-known personalities from culture, science and politics. On Sunday evening, historical radio plays are on the program, 2010 under the motto “Big Voices”.

The evening ends with a jazz show.
