Hayo Freitag (born November 19, 1950 in Wilhelmshaven ) is a German designer, animator, producer, writer and director of cartoons.

After graduating from high school, Freitag studied art and philosophy in Hamburg. During his studies he founded the small publishing house "Cartoon-AG" with artist friends. As an author and illustrator of jointly created picture books, political-satirical works and volumes of poetry, he published, among others: Das Thier-Buch (with Michael Herzog, 1975), Das Häschenbuch (1976), Kunst der Retouche und Tach, Mao (with Helga Eibl, 1977 ), Heim zum Reim (with Jürgen Heer, 1978).

Then he turned to animation and produced short films , some of which have won national and international awards. For example his work Mein Bruder (co-producer: Jürgen Heer), which won the German Short Film Award and the award for best animated film in 1986 at the Animafest Zagreb - World Festival of Animated Films and from the New York Museum of Modern Art in its presentation "Best Animation " has been recorded. The in-house production Das Pflaumenhuhn (co-producer: Michael Schaack) received the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation Prize in 1997 .

In South Korea ( Chungmuro ​​International Film Festival in Seoul 2009 ) The Three Robbers won as best animated film.

Hayo Freitag is a founding member of the German Film Academy .
