Anthony Thomas Peden (born September 15, 1970 in Manly , Australia ) is a former Australian and from 1998 New Zealand track cyclist . Since 2018 he has been the national coach of the Chinese National Track Cycling Team (short-term).

Athletic career

In 1992 Anthony Peden was third at the UCI Track World Championships in Valencia in a tandem race with David Dew . In 1999 he became vice world champion in the Keirin in Berlin . In 2002 he started at the Commonwealth Games and finished fourth in the team sprint with Justin Grace and Nathan Seddon . In 2006 he finished second in the keirin at the national championships in New Zealand.

In 2000 Anthony Peden took part in the Olympic Games in Sydney in the sprint and keirin, but could not take a front place. A second participation in the Olympic Games failed in 2004 because Peden was proven to have taken an illicit drug. Peden explained that a German doctor had given him the remedy for back pain during a training session; he was not aware that the preparation contained active ingredients that were on the doping list.

Professional

Peden lived in Lausanne and worked as the personal trainer for motorcycle racer Casey Stoner from the Ducati Grand Prix team . From summer 2013 he was coach of the New Zealand national sprint track team. In February 2015, he was voted Coach of the Year in New Zealand . At the end of May 2018, Peden ended his job as New Zealand's national coach. In connection with this, allegations of "inappropriate behavior" were made known against him, such as alcohol binge in the vicinity of the national team and a sexual relationship with a driver, which according to a code signed by Peden is not permitted in the New Zealand Association. The teammates had been instructed not to talk about it. Former cyclist Stephanie McKenzie said before a committee of inquiry that she had been bullied by Peden and male athletes. In addition, more than 20 employees have left the coaching staff because of this atmosphere. A few days later it became known that Peden was moving to the Chinese Cycling Federation as a short-term coach.

Miscellaneous

In 1998, Anthony Peden changed his citizenship from Australian to New Zealand. He has the same family roots in Scotland as the Canadian six-day driver William Peden .
