The 32nd Bayern Tour took place from May 25th to 29th, 2011. The race was held in five stages, including an individual time trial , over a distance of 798.3 kilometers. It was part of the UCI Europe Tour 2011 and was classified there in the 2nd HC category.

In the individual time trial, nine physically handicapped cyclists competed, including participants in the Paralympics such as Michael Teuber and Wolfgang Sacher .

Overall winner was the Briton Geraint Thomas from Team Sky ProCycling ahead of Nicki Sørensen (Saxo Bank SunGard) from Denmark and Michael Albasini (HTC-Highroad) from Switzerland.

Stages

In the 1st stage from Pfarrkirchen to Freystadt on May 25th, five outliers were only made three kilometers from the finish. The Norwegian Edvald Boasson Hagen won the mass sprint ahead of André Schulze (CCC Polsat Polkowice) and Heinrich Haussler (Garmin Cervelo).

The 2nd stage from Freystadt to Bad Gögging on May 26th was won by the German John Degenkolb ahead of Marcel Kittel (Skil-Shimano) and Edvald Boasson Hagen.

The 3rd stage from Bad Gögging to Aichach on May 27th ran over hilly terrain, in bad weather a top group around the eventual overall winner Geraint Thomas from the Sky ProCycling team was able to break away and drive a decisive five minutes ahead of the other favorites. Michael Albasini ( HTC-Highroad ) was victorious in the group sprint.

The 4th stage on May 28th was the time trial in Friedberg . The Briton Bradley Wiggins (Team Sky) won the time trial and surprisingly relegated time trial world champion Fabian Cancellara to second place. Geraint Thomas took over the yellow jersey with fifth place.

The final stage from Friedberg to Moosburg on May 29th was marked by the solo trip by Jarosław Marycz from the Saxobank Sungard team. Only after 140 kilometers was Marycz swallowed by the peloton about five kilometers from the finish. The final stage was won by the Italian Giacomo Nizzolo (Leopard Trek) in a mass sprint in Moosburg ahead of John Degenkolb and Edvald Boasson Hagen.

Overall winner of the Bayern Rundfahrt 2011 was Geraint Thomas ahead of Nicki Sørensen and Michael Albasini .
