The River Calder is a left tributary of the River Ribble in Lancashire , England . It arises southeast of Holme Chapel and flows northwest through Walk Mill to then reach Burnley .

The Whalley Viaduct

The calder crosses under the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Burnley in one passage and then crosses Padiham . It then flows through Altham and Whalley , where the Whalley Viaduct (1846–1850) crosses it, and then touches the ruins of Whalley Abbey . The confluence with the Ribble is at Great Mitton .
