Whalley is a place with 2645 inhabitants (2001) in Lancashire , England . The place is on the River Calder in the Ribble Valley .
The origins of the Parish Church of St Mary and All Saints' date back to 628 and it is a Grade I Monument .
The place has a train station on the railway line from Blackburn to Manchester , which runs in Whalley on the Whalley Viaduct over the River Calder. The viaduct was built from brick between 1846 and 1850. The viaduct has a height of 21.30 meters and a length of 620 meters. The construction consists of 48 arches. On October 6, 1849 , two of the 41 arches that had been completed by then collapsed, killing three people. The viaduct is now a Grade II monument .
The former Cistercian Abbey Whalley Abbey is located in the south of the village on the River Calder.
