James William "Jimmy" Crabtree (born December 23, 1871 in Burnley , † March 31, 1908 in Birmingham ) was an English football player who was used most of his career for Aston Villa as a defender and midfielder.

Career

Crabtree began his footballing career in August 1889 at Burnley FC , for which he played 72 games until 1894. In the meantime he played for two other clubs that did not belong to the league. On March 3, 1894, he completed his first international match for England against Ireland . In total, Crabtree has been called up to the national team 14 times. He played his last international match against Wales . In August 1895, the Englishman moved to Aston Villa for a transfer fee of £ 250 . Perhaps that was the first transfer fee paid in English football. At Aston Villa he became a successful player. By 1902, Jimmy Crabtree played 178 league games for Villa, in which he scored six goals. Thereafter, nothing is known about his further career in a period of two years. In January 1904 he was finally transferred to Plymouth Argyle , where he ended his football career five months later and coached various regional clubs. In March 1908, Crabtree died of alcohol problems .
