Robert Nutter

Robert Nutter (* 1550 at Burnley , Lancashire , according to another source 1557 , † July 26, 1600 in Lancaster ) was a Dominican priest and martyr . He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on November 22, 1987 , and his feast is July 27 .

Nutter was educated at Brasenose College of Oxford University and the British Pontifical College . After his ordination on December 21, 1581, he first worked as a diocesan priest in England . After an exile from England for about two years, he returned and worked as a pastor for two years. In 1585 he was captured and entered the Dominican order . He gained some notoriety through debates with Protestant theologians in Lancaster Castle , near which he was martyred on July 26, 1600. Robert Nutter was hanged .

Robert Nutter belongs to the group of the so-called "85 Martyrs of England and Wales", who were beatified by Pope John Paul II on November 22, 1987. He is one of the numerous priests, religious and lay people who died martyrs in England in the 16th and 17th centuries because of their belief in the Catholic faith and the Pope.
