Willis Jackson, Baron Jackson of Burnley FRS (born October 29, 1904 in Burnley , † February 17, 1970 ) was a British electrical engineer.

education

Willis Jackson was the only son of Herbert Jackson and his wife Annie, nee Hiley. By 1925 he studied electrical engineering at Victoria University of Manchester . He earned a Bachelor of Science with excellent degrees and after receiving three grants. In 1926 he completed the Master of Science .

Professional career

After his training, Willis Jackson was first lecturer in electrical engineering at Bradford Technical College (now the University of Bradford ). The following year he worked as a trainee for the electrical company Metropolitan-Vickers . From 1930 he taught at the Institute of Science and Technology at the University of Manchester and from 1933 at Queen's College , Oxford . In 1936 he graduated as Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Oxford and as Doctor of Science in Manchester. He then worked for Vickers as a research engineer for two years until he got a professorship in Manchester. In 1946 he moved to the Imperial College London as a professor of electrical engineering , was elected to the Royal Society in 1953 and was again employed by Vickers until 1961, as director of the department for research and training.

Jackson held many committee and association offices throughout his life. From 1958 to 1960 he was President of the Institution of Electrical Engineers and then President of the Association of Supervising Electrical Engineers . Until 1962 he was chairman of the board of directors of the Royal Technical Institute, Salford (now the University of Salford ) for four years . In 1961 he returned to Imperial College , where he headed the Department of Electrical Engineering until his death in 1970 . For the past three years he has been the college's vice rector . In 1962 he became a member of the Southern Eastern Electricity Board . 1940 Jackson was for four years in the Radio Research Board of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research , of which he was a member until 1950. From 1945 he was a member of an advisory committee of the British Ministry of Education and from 1947 of the Department of Energy. The following year he also became a member of the BBC's technical advisory board , and in 1951 was a member of the selection committee for the Commonwealth Fund Fellowships .

In the last years of his life, Willis Jackson helped set up the Indian Institute of Technology .

Honors

1958 Willis Jackson was beaten to Knight Bachelor . In 1967 he was named a Life Peer , Baron Jackson of Burnley, in the County Palatine of Lancaster .

Jackson's achievements have also been recognized with numerous honorary doctorates, such as the Doctor of Science from ETH Zurich , the University of Bristol and City University London . He received honorary degrees in engineering from the University of Sheffield and from the University of Aberdeen and the University of Leeds in law .

Willis Jackson was married from 1938; he and his wife had two daughters.
