Alberto Máximo Zozaya (born April 13, 1908 in Gualeguaychú , † February 17, 1981 in La Plata ) was an Argentine football player and later coach. As a player mainly in the jersey of Estudiantes de La Plata and in the Argentine national football team , he later coached the Portuguese record champions Benfica Lisbon in addition to Estudiantes .
Player career
Club career
Alberto Zozaya was born on April 13, 1908 in Gualeguaychú in the Entre Ríos province in northeastern Argentina . He had eight siblings. He started playing football at the age of 11 in the Quarta División at Juventud Unida . Around three years later he joined the first team of Central Entrerriano. As a young player, Don Padilla came to Estudiantes de La Plata in 1929 , where he would spend almost his entire football career. In those days when the Argentine Primera División was the highest professional league in the country, Estudiantes was far from being able to play the championship. Two years after Zozaya's move to Estudiantes, the Primera División went into its first edition and Estudiantes de La Plata was able to surprisingly finish the season in third place. The first Argentinian professional champion CA Boca Juniors was six points missing . Alberto Zozaya was also the first top scorer in this league with 33 goals ahead of Alejandro Scopelli . His first goal this season he scored in a clash with Talleres de Remedios de Escalada . This was also the first goal in the history of Argentine professional football. The following year, Estudiantes was sixth, and another year later, only tenth. In general, the club moved more and more away from the top positions in the Primera División and rather played in the midfield of the league. Alberto Zozaya also failed to match his goal rate from the 1931 season.
Alberto Zozaya played for Estudiantes de La Plata from 1930 to 1939 and made 181 league games for his employer during this time. He scored 144 goals in these games. So he was ranked third in the all-time best list of Estudiantes de La Plata in terms of league goals scored. Only his later teammate Manuel Pelegrina and Ricardo Infante have more hits for the club from the capital of the province of Buenos Aires .
Zozaya played briefly in 1940 each for the Racing Club and Bella Vista in Uruguay before he ended his football career at the age of 32.
National team
Between 1933 and 1937 Alberto Zozaya made a total of nine international matches for the Argentine national soccer team . He got eight goals. He was part of the Argentine contingent that was victorious at the Campeonato Sudamericano in 1937 in their own country. With the team around players like José María Minella , Francisco Varallo or Carlos Peucelle , Argentina won the now necessary playoff 2-0 after extra time after tied on points with Brazil , with Alberto Zozaya coming off in the 65th minute and replaced by Bernabé Ferreyra . With this win in the playoff, Argentina achieved their fifth triumph in what is now known as the Copa América . Alberto Zozaya was one of the main goalscorers of his team in the tournament. He contributed a total of five goals to the Argentine tournament victory, with three goals alone accounted for the 6-1 win over Paraguay .
Coaching career
After the end of his active career, Alberto Zozaya worked as a football coach. So he coached his old club Estudiantes de La Plata from 1945 to 1949. Zozaya led Estudiantes to quite respectable results in the Primera División and reached in the 1948 season with third place, the best placement during this phase. After his departure from Estudiantes in 1949 Alberto Zozaya took over the vacant coaching post at the Portuguese first division club Benfica Lisbon in 1952 , but only reached the runner-up in the Portuguese league with his team. However, Zozaya was able to win the Taça de Portugal with a historic 5-0 final win against FC Porto . Despite winning the Cup, he had to vacate his post at the end of the season and was replaced by António Ribeiro dos Reis .
In the following years, Alberto Zozaya coached a large number of Argentine football clubs, including the city rivals of Estudiantes, Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata , where he was coach in 1960. Zozaya had other engagements at CA Lanús and CA Platense, among others .
