The Sandkaulpark is the second largest park within the Aachener Alleenring after the Elisengarten . It was created as one of the few inner-city areas through the so-called alignment straightening after the war in Aachen. The residential buildings that were largely bombed at the time were abandoned. The park is located within the monument area of protection zone B.

history

One of the primary goals of straightening the alignment in this heavily damaged residential area was the creation of a line of sight between the Monheimsallee spa area with the New Kurhaus and Aachen Cathedral and the town hall. In order to give the world cultural heritage Aachen Cathedral and the palace complex of Charlemagne an architecturally appropriate framework, the city of Aachen suggested establishing a buffer zone in the monument protection statute around the world cultural heritage, whereby the Sandkaulpark represents a part of this monument protection zone .

In Sandkaulpark there was an unused but intact bunker from the Second World War , which was built in April 1941. One wall of the bunker was designed in 2001 as part of the UNESCO- supported “ Mural Global ” program as a joint effort by South African and German artists. Green spaces such as the Sandkaulpark or the Elisengarten make an important contribution to improving the urban climate and noise emissions in the highly sealed inner-city area of Aachen .

Hotel in Sandkaulpark

After the city council of Aachen had decided on the development plan for the redesign of the Sandkaulpark after years of dispute, the excavators arrived in 2013 to put down the old World War II bunker. In its place, a four-star hotel with an underground car park was built, the opening of which took place on May 2, 2016. According to a tree survey, a large part of the existing green space, in particular the striking copper beech and plane trees , was saved and integrated into the area. The plans were made by the citizens' initiative Sandkaulpark e. V. critically accompanied, which, however, could not prevent the demolition of the bunker and the rebuilding of the hotel.
