Luis Varela , full name Luis Alberto Varela , (born August 22, 1941 ) is a former Uruguayan football player .

Career

society

Defensive player Varela is the nephew of Obdulio Jacinto Varela . Previously playing for Liverpool Montevideo , he was a member of Club Atlético Peñarol's squad in the Primera División from 1964 to 1970 . His club won the Uruguayan championship in the 1964 , 1965 , 1967 and 1968 seasons. At the Copa Libertadores 1965 his team reached the finals against CA Independiente , in which the Argentines were ultimately defeated. Coach Roque Máspoli put Varela in the starting line-up in these three games. In the following year, the "Aurinegros" secured the title at the Copa Libertadores 1966 . In the finals, however, Varela was not used. In the Copa Libertadores he played for Peñarol from 1965 to 1969 a total of 24 games. In the second leg of the 1966 World Cup , which the Montevideans also won with two 2-0 victories over Real Madrid , he ran from the start. In 1969, his club also triumphed at the Supercopa de Campeones Intercontinentales . Another career station in Varela is Sud América .

In 1982, a player of the same name contributed to the championship win of the Colón Fútbol Club in the Uruguayan second division. It is not clear whether this is the same Luis Varela.

National team

In 1963 he counted, led by the COU under the name Luis A. Varela , to the Uruguayan squad at the Pan American Games that year that finished fourth in the tournament. Varela was also a member of the senior national team of Uruguay , for which he completed six international matches between January 4, 1967 and February 2, 1967. He did not score an international goal. Varela was part of the squad of Uruguay at the South American Championship in 1967 , in which the Celeste supervised by Juan Carlos Corazzo won the title.
