Historic water ballast runway Funi in Friborg (Switzerland)

The funicular Neuveville – Saint-Pierre (French: Funiculaire Neuveville – Saint-Pierre , colloquially: Funi. ) Is the last funicular with water ballast in Switzerland . It is located in the city of Freiburg . The railway is part of Switzerland's national cultural heritage.

history

Most of the city of Freiburg lies above the deeply cut Saane River . In order to establish a connection between the two quarters of the Lower Town (Neuveville) and Upper Town, a joint stock company for a cable car was founded on April 22, 1897, which was supposed to connect the two parts of the town. The company immediately began building a sewer- operated railway, which lasted from March to December 1898 and cost 140,000 Swiss francs . On February 4, 1899, the Federal Council issued the operating license and after just a few years the railway was making a profit. In 1965 the city of Freiburg bought the majority of the shares.

In December 1977 the funicular merged with the municipal transport company TF, today's Transports publics fribourgeois (TPF).

The age of the railway did not leave its mark on the Funi. over and led to lengthy business interruptions. When a car suffered a broken axle in October 1996, the Federal Office of Transport (FOT) felt compelled to order a complete overhaul. The city considered shutting down the railway and replacing it with buses. Thanks to the massive resistance of the population, this could be averted and the transport companies had the railway restored by Von Roll , which had already built this railway. With this refresh, the two cars also got their original green color back after having been painted red for several decades. On July 3, 1998, the railway was able to resume operations.
