Manfred Näslund

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Manfred Eugén Näslund (internationally sometimes also Naeslund ; born June 28, 1899 in Västernorrland , † July 18, 1988 ) was a Swedish forest scientist . From 1944 to 1957 he was director of the Swedish Forest Research Institute (Statens skogsforskningsinstitut). Scientifically, it has emerged primarily through new approaches to measuring the volume and growth of standing forest stands and has thus given important impulses to forest measurement . Näslund was considered one of the most important European foresters of his time and enjoyed worldwide recognition. From 1957 to 1966 he also worked as Landshövding in the province of Norrbotten County .

Life

Scientific activity at the forest research institute

Manfred Näslund completed his forestry studies at the Forestry College (Skogshögskola) in Stockholm . After working in the forestry practice from 1925 to 1928, he returned to Stockholm in 1929 to start as an assistant at the Statens skogsforskningsinstitut there. In 1941 he became senior assistant and the following year he became head of the research institute's forest department. In 1944, he was appointed professor with the simultaneous transfer of management of the entire forest research institute. This was reorganized under Näslund's leadership in the following years and at the same time significantly enlarged, a task in which his great organizational talent benefited him.

Näslund made a name for himself in the forest science world above all because he and his colleague Henrik Petterson introduced mathematical-statistical methods in forest research very early on. He also enriched them by developing his own formulas. As early as 1929 he was concerned with the derivation of the stand height curve and its accuracy depending on the number of sample trees used for it. For this purpose, he derived an approximation formula with which the mean error of the stand height curve in the area of the mean heights can be determined. This so-called “Näslund formula” can also be used to calculate the number of height measurements required in each case to ensure a certain accuracy of the mean height. It was therefore not surprising that Näslund served the Swedish Reich Forest Taxation (Riksskogstaxering) from 1938 to 1949 as an expert for the statistical processing of the extensive numerical material collected. The book Riksskogstaxering och avverkningsstatistik 1937-1953 published in 1986 , to which Näslund also contributed chapters, was a retrospective of this forest project of the century and its evaluation .

During his almost 30 years of activity at Statens skogsforskningsinstitut, one focus was the supervision of the institute's test areas, with Näslund himself evaluating a number of thinning tests. In addition, the functions and tables drawn up by him and his colleagues for measuring the volume and growth of standing forest stands were important for forestry practice. Manfred Näslund published a large part of his research results in the series Meddelanden från statens skogsförsöksanstalt (German: communications from the Swedish Forest Research Institute ), which he also oversaw for many years as one of its editors and editors.

As district president of Norrbotten

In 1957 Manfred Näslund was appointed Landshövding for the province of Norrbotten County , which at the time consisted of 80 percent forest areas, by the government in Stockholm . However, in addition to the forestry and timber industry, which are naturally important with so much forest, he also managed to promote the general industrial development of this part of the country. He held the office of Landshövding until his retirement in 1966. The experiences and knowledge he gained during this period are reflected in the book Regional Policy. I går, i dag, i morgon (1972) down.

National and international commitment

During his professional life and even afterwards, Professor Näslund held a leading position in a number of forestry, scientific and political bodies in Sweden. He has also always actively promoted international cooperation in the field of forest science and forestry. He played a decisive role in setting up and organizing forest research institutes in Austria , Turkey , Mexico and Burma .

Honors

Manfred Näslund was a member and honorary member of various scientific academies, including the Royal Swedish Forest and Agriculture Academy and the German Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Berlin. His scientific achievements were also recognized with the award of three honorary doctorates (Dr. hc) - including in 1959 by the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

Professor em. Dr. Dr. H. c. mult. Manfred Näslund died on July 18, 1988 at the age of 90.
